Display of bear is profoundly arrogant

| January 13, 2013 6:00 AM

The Jan. 6 Daily Bee included a picture of a 9-foot-tall Alaskan bear that is mounted and displayed at Panhandle State Bank. I was deeply saddened by the bear’s unnecessary death. To kill for sport is simply wrong. To display a murdered bear is profoundly arrogant.

German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer wrote, “The assumption that animals are without rights, and the illusion that our treatment of them has no moral significance, is a positively outrageous example of Western crudity and barbarity.”

We humans are the only species which hunts and kills for enjoyment. “Humane” is an adjective perhaps best reserved for other species.

May all who look upon that bear feel shame.
