Schoening sparkles as Bulldogs down Hawks

| January 18, 2013 8:00 PM

RATHDRUM — Freshman Madi Schoening continues to fill it up offensively, dropping in a career-high 25 points to lead Sandpoint to a 56-49 win over Lakeland in 4A Inland Empire League girls basketball Thursday night in Rathdrum.

Schoening continues to attack the paint offensively, finishing 8-15 from the field and 8-13 from the free throw line, and also picked up four steals for the Bulldogs (11-7, 2-1 4A IEL), who trailed by four at half before turning things around.

Cassie Young added nine points, seven boards and three assists, Emma Liband six points, nine rebounds and two blocks and Hailey Olin eight points, five rebounds and four assists for the Bulldogs, who got to the line at will, but could only convert on 22 of a whopping 42 attempts.

“Twenty free throws left off the scoreboard made this game a nail biter,” said Bulldogs head coach Bill Bender, whose team was sloppy at times and committed 20 turnovers. “With just under three minutes, Emma, Cassie, Kendra (Corless), Hailey and Madi said enough is enough and played smart, hard and with confidence to pull the game out of harm’s way.”

Josie Coder scored 17 points to lead the Hawks (3-14, 0-3 4A IEL), who were officially eliminated from the chance to host the district tournament.

Sandpoint is at Lewiston on Monday.

Hawks down Bulldog boys

RATHDRUM — Jeremiah Gagnon posted 12 points and three rebounds, but a slow start proved costly as the Bulldogs lost 66-38 to the Hawks on Thursday night at Lakeland High School.

Matthew Burgstahler added seven points for the Bulldogs (2-12, 0-2 4A IEL), who had a stretch of turnovers early and could never seem to get back on track.

“We had a bad stretch and it charged them (Lakeland) up and we were on our heels after that,” said Bulldogs head coach Tyler Haynes. “We can’t really do anything except get back at it and prepare for the next game. We’ll see what we need to change for the second time through league.”

Trent Derrick scored 19 points to lead the Hawks (7-7, 1-1 4A IEL).
