Curtailing amendment would devastate U.S.
To our federal, state, and local representatives,
Re: Second Amendment
I am writing to you because of the current political rhetoric concerning the Second Amendment. No one would deny there is, and always has been, a public desire for safety, especially for our children. However, there is no form of gun control that would guarantee public safety (from guns) short of complete confiscation. But if this was even possible to accomplish, it would simply cause criminals to resort to other tools of violence. This may be a sad commentary on human nature, but it is an undeniable reality.
I am sure you are aware; the Second Amendment was not created to simply provide for hunting or personal defense. Its purpose was to prevent tyranny, as has been seen over and over in world history. Every time politicians create more gun control laws, they enable the government’s ability (whether slim or not) to consume our other liberties.
The Second Amendment is the shield that protects everything else. There is no clear answer to this problem that will satisfy everyone. Maybe not even a majority. But, if the Second Amendment is lost, or even curtailed, there will be a majority in the future that will see it as the turning point in the loss of this country. The honorable intentions of its removal or curtailment could create enormous unintended future consequences.
