Take time to reflect on rights, responsibilities

| July 4, 2013 7:00 AM

Every year we celebrate the Fourth of July. Sadly, many people don’t know what we are really celebrating. You don’t believe me? Ask people to explain to you what it is.

This is the most important day of our great nation. “THE” country that has been the pinnacle of achievement for the rest of the world to look up to. This date celebrates our independence from Great Britain after continuing abuses and usurpations.

Those who signed the Declaration of Independence were accused of treason. The vision and sacrifices of these men and their families should be a complete study in itself in our American history classes. They gave of themselves in the hopes that we would never have to face tyranny again.

Yet, due to our lack of education we have allowed ourselves to be once again under tyrannical rule. Some recent examples are:

• The NSA collects phone and email records on law-abiding citizens (with no warrant)

• Our State Department “deliberately” lied about Benghazi (the full truth may never come out).

• The Justice Department sold weapons to NARCO terrorist through Fast and Furious (but pursues tighter restrictions on responsible owners and businesses).

• The Attorney General has spied on journalists, judges, and unknown others.

• The IRS is getting involved in all aspects of our lives (professional and private.)

• The Secretary of Health and Human Services is extorting insurance companies and others to promote the UN-Affordable Healthcare Act.

Please read the Declaration of Independence, and read it to your children and grandchildren. There is nothing wrong with justifiable pride in your country.

Our government is instituted by deriving its powers from the consent of the governed.

Reflect on our independence from tyranny and our ongoing responsibility in curtailing the consent we give this government.

Happy Independence Day
