Legion baseball returns to Sandpoint this summer

SANDPOINT — Thanks to a generous sponsorship from Peak Sand and Gravel, and the return of a couple successful former coaches, American Legion baseball returns to Sandpoint this summer, starting with a home-opening doubleheader on Sunday at War Memorial Field.

Former Sandpoint and legion coach Mike Givens and former legion coach and SHS assistant Rick Klontz are coaching the team this season, with help from former players and volunteer coaches Hans Feyen Sr., Hans Feyen Jr., Scott Snow, Tevin Hamilton and John Nishimoto.

Givens and Klontz teamed up to lead the Bulldogs to their lone state baseball title in 2006, and bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the field. Their return, along with a big sponsorship from Mike Peak, has led to a single A division Legion team.

“Peak Sand and Gravel sponsored the team 100 percent. That means they are paying for the two main coaches' stipend, the uniforms, registration, the works,” said Nishimoto. “Mike Peak’s commitment truly made this season happen for us.”

A few former Sandpoint players returned to join a core of current players to meet the minimum number for a team. Among the probable starters are Caleb Nishimoto, who played baseball as a freshman for the College of Idaho, former IEL league player Sam Nitcy, former Bulldog Zach Envik and freshman catcher Paul Sundquist.

Givens, who has coached baseball and softball at the college level, addressed the team at a recent player meeting, espousing some of his philosophies.

“Our goal as coaches is to get you players to play to your potential,” said Givens. “It’s not winning or losing. It’s about getting better, learning the game, and playing to your potential.”
