Community's support saves students' lives

| June 4, 2013 7:00 AM

On behalf of the students and staff of Sandpoint High School, I would like to thank our community service organizations for working with our Student Leadership organization over the past year to plan, organize, and orchestrate the most impactful Mock DUI program we have ever held.

Under the leadership of the Lake Pend Oreille School District’s school resource officer, Sandpoint Police Officer Ian Hoyland and Student Leadership advisor Malia Meschko, the students had the pleasure of working with people from the following agencies/organizations to create a meaningful and true community event: Bonner County Sheriff’s Office, Sandpoint Police, Sandpoint Fire, Sagle Fire, Bonner General Medical Doctor team, Bonner General Hospital, Life Flight, Bonner County EMS, Bonner County 911, KPND radio host Johnny Knight, and many other volunteers.

Various individuals from these organizations selflessly volunteered to work with our students to ensure that the Mock DUI crash scene was absolutely believable and realistic so as to create a meaningful educational experience for our seniors. It takes hours of preparation and planning to pull off such a professional and intense scenario — we acknowledge your dedication and thank you for your commitment to this program.

Student feedback is overwhelmingly positive and centered on increased awareness and gratitude for our community’s support. Clyde’s Towing, Quality Inn, Verizon, Lakeview Funeral Home, and Bill Jones Distributers also graciously donated services.

We want you to know that this program has already saved lives and will continue to do so. Thank you for caring and supporting our community’s youth — you are all truly appreciated and esteemed.
