Community raises more than $12,000 at Bay Trail Fun Run

| June 7, 2013 7:00 AM

SANDPOINT — Add another $12,000 and change to the tally, as the first ever Bay Trail Fun Run drew more than 300 runners to the picturesque Pend Oreille Bay Trail for 5K and 10K races recently in Sandpoint.

Hosted by the Idaho Conservation League, Trinity at City Beach and Friends of Pend Oreille Bay Trail, the fundraiser puts the Friends that much closer to their goal of reaching $400,000 by October of 2014. Presently, they’ve raised more than $300,000 in an effort to purchase a key piece of waterfront land along the trail.

Race director Nancy Dooley lauded the community participation, from runners and walkers to sponsors and donors, and loved hearing how beautiful the trail was from people who had never seen it in person.

“They were super enthusiastic and thankful that the land is going to be protected forever,” said Dooley, who plans to make it an annual event. “This course has been a community rallying point.”

More than 70 volunteers stepped up to make the event run smoothly, while more than 30 sponsors donated to the cause.

Sam Mills clocked a 40:16 to win the overall 10K portion of the race, while Al Mayer finished at 21:51 to edge Patrick Goodman by nine seconds to win the 5K.
