SANDPOINT — A preliminary hearing is pending for an Oldtown man accused of choking his wife and threatening to shoot her with a shotgun.

Donald Morris Edwards is charged with attempted strangulation and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was arrested on a warrant Monday and made an initial appearance in Bonner County Magistrate Court on Tuesday.

Judge Debra Heise ordered Edwards held in lieu of $25,000 bail and appointed a public defender to represent him, court records indicate. The court also entered an order forbidding Edwards from contacting his wife or their children, although the alleged victim seeks to have the no-contact order lifted.

Edwards, 38, is accused of attacking his wife on May 26, charging papers indicate.

A hearing to determine if there is sufficient cause to try Edwards on the felony charges is set for Wednesday. A hearing on the proposed termination of the no-contact order is set for June 18.
