| June 12, 2013 7:00 AM

SANDPOINT — The Peak Sand and Gravel Lakers plated eight runs in the final two innings in a fierce comeback attempt, but could not overcome an eight run deficit in a 10-9 loss to Priest River in the American Legion home opener on Tuesday at War Memorial Field.

Caleb Nishimoto struck out seven in four innings of work, before Priest River scored five runs in the top of the fourth to knock him out of the game. John Humrich came in and pitched the final three innings to keep the game close.

Jackson Russo had a hit and an RBI, Sam Nitcy and Nishimoto each had a hit and Kyle Perry had a hit and stole a base to help lead the comeback attempt, as the Lakers (0-1) scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth and another two in the final frame.

Game two of the home-opening doubleheader was still in progress at press time.

In a show of support for Sandpoint baseball, Litehouse is offering a free huckleberry slushie to any fan at the game if the Lakers can score 10 or more runs. The offer is good through June 21.
