Ray, Gunter are sworn in

SANDPOINT — Gloria Ray and Wayne Gunter were sworn in Monday as trustees of the East Bonner County Library District.

Gunter and Ray won the board of trustees seats during last month’s library district election, beating out incumbent Jim Spagon and Susan Shea.

Gunter was the district’s former director, while Ray was its librarian. Both retired before seeking election to the board.

Trustees briefly discussed stagnation in library visitors, which was attributed to the increasing popularity in e-books and digital media streaming services such as Netflix.

Ray noted that the county’s population has contracted.

“It’s kind of a challenge for every board, every library district,” said Trustee Shannon May.

“What can we do to turn that around?” asked Gunter.

The board also discussed canvassing patrons to learn more about what services the patrons of the district need or want.

Trustees were also told of a district lifelong learning participant who initially could barely read due to profound dyslexia, but went on to obtain a motorcycle-riding license and recently read aloud in public for the first time.
