Klein, Hazinsky, Vogel garner All-NSL hoops honors
CLARK FORK — Clark Fork boys basketball coach Corey Vogel was named Coach of the Year, and seniors Joey Hazinsky and Zack Klein were each named to the All-North Star League boys basketball team, as voted on by the league’s coaches.
Vogel led the Wampus Cats to three wins in their final four league games, before falling to Kootenai in the district championship.
“I take it was a team award,” said Vogel of the coaching honor. “We had a good season, we just couldn’t quite get it done.”
Hazinsky, a cat-quick senior guard, averaged 11 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals a game, and put some octane in the Cats’ fast break.
“He was an all-around everywhere player,” said Vogel of Hazinsky. “He was one of the best defenders we had. We’d stick him on their best player, and he’d do a good job of shutting him down.”
Klein, the focal point of most opposing defenses, exploded for 28 points twice on the season en route to averaging 10.6 points and three assists. He led the team by shooting 70 percent from the free throw line, and made 38 three-pointers, including a school record eight against Lakeside.
“One thing about him is our opponents had to adjust their defense around him,” said Vogel. “He’s also really good at driving to the hoop, and when he was on, he was on.”
Both Hazinsky and Klein got to the free throw line often, as the Cats shot nearly twice as many free throws as their opponents.
