Lessons learned in arts valuable in life

| March 7, 2013 6:00 AM

According to the No Child Left Behind Act of 2002: “The term ‘core academic subjects’ means English, reading or language arts, mathematics, science, foreign languages, civics and government, economics, arts, history and geography.” Title IX, Part A, sec. 9101(11)

The arts, including music, drama, and visual art, are part of the core curriculum and are yet threatened by spending cuts. Arts education includes most of our students at all levels. What a difference it makes in their ability to learn (even in other subjects) and their futures.

For example, Jon Brownell directs several award-winning choirs at SMS and SHS involving hundreds of young musicians. They sing across the spectrum of music genres and learn about history and theory of music as they develop their talent. They learn to work together to achieve harmony and balance. What a lesson we can all apply.
