Vote 'no' to send message to Boise

| March 8, 2013 6:00 AM

School levies are part of Idaho’s unconstitutional school funding scheme, the Idaho Supreme Court said in 2005. The court ordered the Legislature to develop a constitutional scheme, but more than seven years later the Legislature has not done so, causing new litigation in 2012.

Article X (10) of the Idaho constitution requires “the legislature of Idaho, to establish and maintain a general, uniform and thorough system of public, free common schools.”

The court did not tell the legislature how, but its order gave them a big clue: read all of Article X! Article X also tells how those schools are to be funded.

We all want great education for our kids. But letting the Legislature shirk its duty onto local school districts and improper taxation is unethical. The no-cost solution is to force school districts to pressure Boise.

Vote “no” on the school levy and start the message rolling.
