Calvert delivers in clutch as Bulldogs down Trojans
POST FALLS — It was an exceptional seventh inning for Sandpoint sophomore Lucy Calvert, who started a huge seven run rally in the seventh inning with a single, then produced the game winning RBI hit to end it, leading the Bulldogs to a thrilling 11-10 win over Post Falls in nonleague softball on Thursday.
The Bulldogs (1-3) trailed 10-4 when they came to bat in the top of the seventh, before staging a wild game-winning comeback.
“It was a big-time inning for Lucy,” said Bulldogs head coach Derek Dickinson, calling the game a barn-burner. “We were down for the count, made every mistake known to man. They showed a lot of heart.”
Breanna Buchmiller led the offense with three hits, Jordan Speelmon and Calvert added two apeice and catcher Mamie Mitchell had a clutch RBI in the seventh.
Casey Bottomley tossed a complete game seven hitter, striking out seven in a strong outing. Many of the runs were unearned, as the Bulldogs committed five errors, but still found a way to win.
Tayler Ekness had two RBIs for 5A Post Falls (1-5).
“We just made errors at a crucial time and they capitalized on that,” Post Falls assistant coach Megan Piephoff said.
