District grateful for community's support

| March 31, 2013 7:00 AM

It is with gratitude that I write this letter of appreciation on behalf of the Lake Pend Oreille School District. As you know, we just recently passed our supplemental levy election with 58 percent of our voters supporting the levy. We are thankful and appreciative of the fact that this community consistently supports quality education for our students, even in challenging economic times. We will do what it takes to continue to inspire confidence in our stakeholders by careful reflection of practice and the impact of our practice on student learning.

With the district’s voter approved levy funds, we are gearing up for the new Common Core State Standards in our school district. The new standards will be fully taught and implemented during the 2013-2014 school year. This year has been spent transitioning some of our grade levels into using these standards to guide instruction, assessment, and learning. While transitions can be difficult, ultimately the new standards will be a great opportunity for student learning in our state and district.

Over the next couple of months we will be finalizing our preferred vision for the future for teaching and learning in our school district. This vision will help guide our practice over the next several years. Included in those things being considered are use of technology to enhance student learning, the identification and utilization of research-based, high yield instructional strategies, and systematic application of standards-based teaching and learning practices.

We are always looking for ways to improve the education of our students. If you have ideas or suggestions, please feel free to email me at shawn.woodward@lposd.org. Again, we thank you for your support!
