CALDWELL — The Clark Fork girls doubles team of senior Heather Wold and junior Lyndsie Kiebert advanced to the semis on Friday during day one of the 3A state tennis tournament at Vallivue High School.

The duo are now just two wins away from a state title, a remarkable feat for a 1A school facing off against 2A and 3A opponents. The Wampus Cats are in sixth place among 15 schools after day one.

Wold and Kiebert earned a first round bye by winning districts, then downed Deary 6-2, 6-0 in straight sets in the quarters. Wampus Cats head coach Jeff Emmer was pleased that the team showed no signs of the nerves that often come with the pressure of playing at state.

“Everything was working today, it was fun to watch,” said Emmer, who likes his team’s chances of winning today. “I like them pretty well. They’re looking competitive.”

Junior Annie Wurm and freshman Jake Aguirre were eliminated from the mixed doubles draw after losing 6-3, 6-4 to one of the Weiser teams, then falling 6-1, 6-3 to the other. Despite the losses, Emmer was happy with their performance and a chance to see what the competition is like at state.

“They played really well, they just met a couple of really good teams,” said Emmer, who feels both players will return stronger next year. “Jake is just a freshman, he’ll be back here a few times.”

Wold and Kiebert face Fruitland in the semis today at 8 a.m.
