IDL sessions set in wake of CWC layoffs

SANDPOINT — The Idaho Department of Labor is mobilizing to help individuals laid off by Coldwater Creek Tuesday.

A pair of orientation sessions are scheduled for Nov. 6 and Nov. 13, both at 2 p.m., at 2101 West Pine Street. The meetings are specifically tailored to help former Coldwater Creek employees explore their options and find new opportunities following the layoffs.

Those wishing to attend the orientation sessions should reserve space by calling 263-7544 or emailing sandpointmail@idaho.gov.

According to Bridgette Bradshaw-Fleer, manager of the Sandpoint office of Idaho Department of Labor, the sessions will explore different department services, including unemployment benefits, dislocated worker funds and services designed to connect individuals up with new employment. Attendees will receive suggestions on brushing up their résumés and getting back into the workforce.

However, the sessions will go deeper on an individual level, Bradshaw-Fleer said. Department counselors will be on hand to discuss each individual’s options based on their skill set and interests.

“We’re here for people to bounce ideas off of us,” Bradshaw-Fleer said.

That could be a valuable service for many individuals, each of whom is bringing their own goals and interests to the table. Many, for example, are likely reluctant to leave Sandpoint, Bradshaw-Fleer said. Others might be interested in taking the opportunity to advance their education or professional training.

“There’s not going to be any one-size-fits-all solutions here,” Bradshaw-Fleer added.

To that end, orientation sessions can offer some surprising options. According to Bradshaw-Fleer, her department manages federal funds from the Workforce Investment Act. These funds can potentially open up new training opportunities for transitioning workers.

“We want to sit down individually with people to find out what things they’re after,” Bradshaw-Fleer said.
