Bulldog girls fall to Trojans in season opener

| November 20, 2013 6:00 AM

POST FALLS — Senior Hailey Olin and Nikole Alamillo each had strong games, but poor shooting and a slow first half proved costly as Sandpoint lost 49-37 to 5A Post Falls in a nonleague season opener Tuesday night at Post Falls High School.

Olin led the Bulldogs (0-1) with 12 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals, but was only 2-10 from beyond the arc. Sandpoint was outscored 14-2 in the first quarter, and played the Trojans even after that.

Alamillo had a big game down low, grabbing 11 rebounds while going 2-3 from the field and 2-3 from the foul line, the lone Bulldog to shoot well on the night.

“Nine percent shooting in the first half and 23 percent for the game was a major reason for the loss,” said Bulldogs head coach Bill Bender, whose team only made 36 percent from the free throw line as well. “We clearly played well enough to win, but the basket just wouldn’t let us find our rhythm.”

Maryah Delgado scored nine points and made two 3-pointers, Karlee Williams added four points and five boards, and Cassie Young added five rebounds in defeat.

Sandpoint is at Timberlake on Thursday, before hosting Lake City on Friday during a busy week of hoops.
