Schoening explodes for 25 as Bulldogs topple Tigers
SPIRIT LAKE — Sophomore Madi Schoening had a monster game, scoring 25 points to go with 10 rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks, leading Sandpoint to a 65-59 win over Timberlake on Thursday in nonleague girls basketball in Spirit Lake.
Schoening scored nearly half her points at the line, making 12-14 free throws, part of a strong showing as the Bulldogs made 20-25 as a team. The Bulldogs (1-1) outscored the Tigers 18-5 in the opening quarter, and were up 17 points in the third quarter before the Tigers staged a late run.
“Strength and resolve overcomes speed and quickness,” said Bulldogs coach Bill Bender, whose team held on for the win. “Clutch free throws down the stretch sealed the victory.”
After a cold shooting night at Post Falls, the Bulldogs rebounded by shooting 41 percent from the field and 80 percent from the line, marked improvements. Maryah Delgado added 17 points on 8-15 field goals, as the Bulldogs only took three shots from beyond the arc.
Hailey Olin added 11 points, five assists and four rebounds, and Cassie Young four points and five boards for the Bulldogs.
Sandpoint hosts 5A Lake City tonight, with the home-opening tipoff slated for 7 p.m. at Les Rogers Court.
