Weme goal earns Bulldogs 1-1 draw with Bears with Bears
SANDPOINT — Make it nine straight wins without a defeat for the Sandpoint girls, who earned 1-1 draw with Moscow on Tuesday in a 4A Inland Empire League soccer clash at Pine St. Field.
Moscow (5-4-5, 1-1-1 4A IEL) took a 1-0 lead when Ashley Engberg capitalized on a ball that got past the Sandpoint defense and scored on a breakaway.
Sandpoint (8-3-3, 3-0-1 4A IEL) scored the equalizer late in the first half when Sierra Scott lofted a shot that was misplayed by the Moscow keeper, and Emma Weme was in the right spot at the right time to punch a short goal into the empty net.
The win secures home field advantage for the Bulldogs, who match up pretty evenly with the Bears, as the two schools figure to battle it out in districts for the right to go to state.
“Our focus was better at the start of the game. I thought we matched their intensity, and they work hard,” said Bulldogs head coach Conor Baranski. “Our team doesn’t give up easily. We fight until the 80th minute.”
Sandpoint hosts Lake City on Thursday.
