Scott, Kiebert lead Bulldogs past state champs

| October 11, 2013 7:00 AM

SANDPOINT — Sierra Scott scored her 12th goal of the season just five minutes into the game, and Sandpoint rode the early momentum to a 3-1 win over the reigning 5A state champion Timberwolves in nonleague girls soccer on Thursday at Pine St. Field.

Lake City (7-4-3) scored the equalizer when Julia McCaw finished a nice pass from Jen Snow in the 27th minute. Two minutes later the Timberwolves’ defense misplayed a ball for an own goal, giving the Bulldogs (9-3-3) a 2-1 lead at half.

“They’re the defending state champs, a team we should be up for,” said Bulldogs head coach Conor Baranski, whose team tied Lake City 0-0 in the first meeting. “I thought we were unlucky not to win the first time we played them. Our defense was organized, we finished our chances, it was a good team performance.”

Kaylee Kiebert added an insurance goal, and defenders Corinne Ariss, Madi Schoening, Lani Wahl and Ashtyn Evans helped pitch a shutout in the second half.

Sandpoint hosts Mead, the fourth and final Greater Spokane League team on the schedule, today at 4 p.m. for Senior Night.
