Liband powers Bulldogs to second place finish
SANDPOINT — Senior captain Emma Liband had a huge tournament, swatting 24 kills to go with team highs of 15 blocks and 11 aces, leading the Bulldogs to a second place finish among 24 teams on Saturday at the Lakeland Invitational volleyball tournament.
The Bulldogs (11-4) advanced to the finals of a big tournament for the first time in three years, falling to reigning 5A state champion Lewiston in the finals for the second straight week, this time 25-18, 25-8.
“The last match wasn’t very inspiring, but overall it was a great day,” said Bulldogs head coach Karen Alsager. “It was exciting to have a great showing and I’m energized as we move forward.”
The Bulldogs beat Kellogg and Cheney in straight sets, then fell to Greater Spokane League foe Mead 25-20, 25-18 to wrap up pool play. Sandpoint then beat Pullman 21-25, 25-23 and 19-17 in the quarters and LaJolla, of California, 21-25, 25-18 and 15-12 in the semis to set up another showdown with the Bengals.
Taylor Martin had a strong day in the attack, smashing 32 kills to go with 28 digs, while Mariah Kluver added 35 digs, Hailey Dunn 51 assists and Kennedy Search 46 assists for the Bulldogs. Alsager praised the inspired play of Liband in the middle.
“She had incredible energy and a positive attitude throughout the entire day,” described Alsager. “I’m so impressed with her as a coach for what she’s bringing to the table this year.”
Sandpoint hosts Moscow in a league showdown on Tuesday, at 7 p.m.
