Volunteers invited to sweep paths
SANDPOINT — Volunteers will be out in force on Saturday, Sept. 21, to spruce up bicycle and pedestrian facilities in and around Sandpoint.
The public is encouraged to participate from 9 a.m. to noon. There will be hot dogs and soft drinks when the work is finished.
Volunteers plan on sweeping the length of the Long Bridge in sections. Those interested in sweeping can report to the south end of the bridge at 9 a.m.
A group has already been selected to pull weeds and other unwanted vegetation on the Sand Creek Byway’s living wall. That group will use ladders to yank tansy and poplar tree succors that have started growing.
The clean-up work is being done in conjunction with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ annual Day of Service. Since Sept. 11, 2001, the LDS church have done a worldwide day of service to honor those who died in the terrorist attacks and their loved ones.
Local LDS officials have invited other churches to assist in the Day of Service efforts.
Activities have included cleaning up parks, building fences, painting homes, painting curbs in Sandpoint. Last year, several local cemeteries were cleaned and cataloged via GPS for a site called billiongraves.com, which the public can use for ancestry research.
