Robinson sparks Bulldogs to 2-1 win over Vikings
COEUR d’ALENE — Athena Robinson had her best game of the season, scoring a goal and providing a lift to Sandpoint, which beat Coeur d’Alene 2-1 on Tuesday in nonleague girls soccer road match.
The Bulldogs (5-3-2) were a little sluggish early, and Robinson finally broke a game and a half scoring drought in the 47th minute to get things going.
“On the whole it was a little bit sloppy, but we got the job done,” said Bulldogs head coach Conor Baranski, praising the play of Robinson. “We talked about taking more shots at halftime, and seven minutes later she takes a shot from 25 yards out and put it in the upper corner. She was the best player on the field today.”
Sierra Scott added an insurance goal five minutes later to put Sandpoint up 2-0, her team-leading seventh goal of the season.
“That one hurt us, but we struggled a lot today,” Vikings coach Andy Vredenberg said of Scott’s goal. “My hat’s off to Sandpoint.”
Gillian Sanchez scored to the far post for Coeur d’Alene (1-7-1) from six yards out, erasing a would-be shutout in the final minutes.
Sandpoint hosts 5A state champion Post Falls on Saturday at 6 p.m. under the lights of War Memorial Field.
