Long Bridge Swim caps a great week for swimming

SANDPOINT — “It was just the best year  — ever.”

From the first person to enter the water to the last swimmer to leave, the 2014 Long Bridge Swim was the best one yet, said swim director Jim Zuberbuhler.

Following the historic swim along the length of Lake Pend Oreille by marathon swimmer Elaine Howley — who also finished the Long Bridge Swim — the Long Bridge Swim went off was a complete success.

“This was a great week for swimming in Sandpoint,” he said.

Zuberbuhler said he lost track of how many people complimented race officials on the race, how it was organized, its safety precautions and more.

“My priorities are that it’s safe, that the same number of swim caps come out that went in. The second thing is that we have fun and the third thing is that we support the swim lessons initiative. It’s just been awesome that our sponsors step up every year.”

Because of that support, the swim ensured that 750 kids were able to take swim lessons.

“The swim program doesn’t completely run itself but we have advocates at all the elementary schools now who bring their kids over,” he said. “I think we’ll come awfully close in a few years of realizing our goal of having no kid get beyond the third grade without learning how to swim.”

The swim’s success would not be possible without its core group of volunteers — some 200 strong — who turn out and make sure the swim runs smoothly, is safe and that everyone has a great time, Zuberbuhler said.

He pointed to Priest Lake Search & Rescue, noting they did an outstanding job as the swim’s bridge spotters; and Sandpoint Fire, which brought the department’s fire boat, kept an eye on swimmers and shot off its water cannon.

“That added a nice bit of pizzazz to this year’s event,” Zuberbuhler said.

Those volunteers make the event the special community event that it is.

“From my perch, it’s such a fantastic community event,” he said. We couldn’t do this without so much help and support from all the agencies that were included, the core volunteers, the 200 people who actually show up and get the work done and I think that’s very much appreciated by our participants.”

Throughout the event, Zuberbuhler said he constantly hears people thanking everyone from the bus drivers and food servers to the Boy Scouts.

“People know that it’s a special event,” he said. “It’s not just some race they’ve paid to be in. It is special, a really special event.”
