Officer involved shooting was not 'murder'

In a recent letter regarding an officer-involved shooting, Jodi Rawson opined that Sandpoint Police officers needlessly “murdered” Jeanetta Riley.

Although I do not know the officers involved, I am a retired police officer with 35 years of experience. As such I would like to clear up some of the commonly held misconceptions regarding these situations:
