Teamwork on display at camp
A battle of the pyramids broke out on Tuesday at Sandpoint High School, part of a teamwork exercise during the Becoming a Bulldog Camp.
Teams of six would sprint 20 yards, then form the pyramid as fast as possible, with more than a few laughs. More than 190 area third through eighth graders are taking part in the first ever camp, which features football, dance and cheer teams.
“Our goal is to bring together a lot of kids from different backgrounds and find the good. Football has a way of crossing barriers and bringing kids together,” said Paul Mauel, who is running the camp along with a bevy of Sandpoint coaches and high school students. “The kids seem super excited if you look at their faces. Teamwork, isn’t that a lifetime sport?”
Mauel, a former linebackers coach at the University of Washington and current defensive coordinator at SHS, hopes the skills the kids learn in the camp translate into an increase in attendance and performance in the classroom.
The four-day camp wraps up on Thursday.
