Bulldogs beat Badgers for B-Cup title

BONNERS FERRY — The coveted B-Cup trophy will remain in the Bulldogs’ possession, after Sandpoint downed Bonners Ferry 48-33 on Tuesday night in a double-dual at Bonners Ferry High School.
The win will factor into the final Moose Madness results, as the Bulldogs split on the day, also falling 48-37 to 3A Kellogg in the other dual.
Scout Nash (120), Tyler Presser (170), Casey Randles (182), Jake Williams (195), Tyler Brown (220) and Justin Hobson each won twice on the night. The Bulldogs, who are still having to forfeit at some of the lighter weights, trailed the Badgers before sweeping every weight from 170 on up.
“Because of how thin we are in the lower weights, we can’t afford to make mistakes, but that is exactly what we did against Kellogg,” said Bulldogs head coach Mike Randles. “We had the lead in three matches against Kellogg when we went to our backs, which translates into a minimum of a 27 point swing. Hats off to Kellogg, because that says they kept attacking regardless of the score.”
Randles singled out the wrestling of freshman August Johnson, who picked up a big win at 126 pounds, and Brown, who displayed controlled aggression against a pair of salty opponents.
The Bulldogs will now turn their focus to the prestigious Tri-State wrestling tournament at North Idaho College, arguably the toughest tournament in the Northwest, with state champions from four states littering the brutal brackets. Scout Nash, Preston Bunty, Mahonri Hunsaker, Tanner McNelley, Tyler Presser, Casey Randles, Jake Williams and Tyler Brown will represent the Bulldogs.
“All are capable of posting wins,” said Randles. “Because they are returning state placers, Jake and Casey will both likely be seeded.”
The two-day tournament starts on Friday in Coeur d’Alene.
