COEUR d’ALENE — Elani Williams scored 11 points to lead Sandpoint, which was held way below its season average in a 56-26 loss to Lake City in the opener of the Coeur d’Alene Winter Classic on Monday afternoon at Coeur d’Alene High School.

The Bulldogs (7-5) struggled to create offense, with leading scorer Madi Schoening, who had 24 points when the Bulldogs handed the Timberwolves (10-1) their lone loss earlier in the season, held to a season low six points. Lake City has won the past two meetings to claim the season series.

“The first time we played them up there they beat us and we didn’t play well,” said Lake City head coach Brian Kelly, whose team beat Sandpoint by 10 in the second meeting on Dec. 12. “Madi’s a great player and it was our goal to take her out of the game and make someone else beat us.”

Clarissa Smith had 14 points and seven rebounds to lead the Timberwolves, currently ranked No. 4 in the state 5A rankings. The Bulldogs managed just 11 points in the second half, but held the Timberwolves to just four points in a strong defensive third quarter.

“I thought that Lake City played one of the better games they have played all year,” head coach Duane Ward said. “We had trouble making shots early on and that came back to hurt us.”

Mountain View High of Meridian ran past Post Falls 78-52 in the other game.

Sandpoint will face No. 5 Post Falls today at noon in a consolation game.
