Rognstad named council president
SANDPOINT — Following the appointment of Carrie Logan to the office of mayor, Councilman Shelby Rognstad has stepped in to replace her as council president.
Members voted unanimously Wednesday to appoint Rognstad to the position. With two years of council experience as an appointee under his belt prior to his election in November to his first full term, Rognstad is one of the most experienced council members, second only by a few days to Tom Eddy.
The council president is expected to take a more thorough leadership role in comparison to other council members, serving as a community representative and filling in for the mayor in the event she be unavailable. Drawing on her own years as council president, Logan said the role often requires a greater time commitment and is a responsibility not to be taken lightly.
“My experience has been that one has to have both the willingness and the time to serve ... in that capacity,” she told council members.
With Logan appointed to mayor two weeks ago and a new council president voted into service, the only remaining task is for Logan to appoint an individual to take her council seat. She’s accepting letters of interest from prospective candidates and will likely make her recommendation to council within the next six to eight weeks.
Those interested in serving on the council must be at least 18 years old and be a U.S. citizen residing within Sandpoint city limits. Letters of interest should include a résumé, contact information and be addressed to the Mayor’s Office, City of Sandpoint, 1123 Lake St., Sandpoint, ID, 83864.
The individual appointed to the office will serve the almost two years remaining in Logan’s council term. After the 2015 election, the term will expire in January 2016.
