Warriors down Wampus Cats in district championship game

COEUR d’ALENE — A cold shooting first half proved too much to overcome, as Clark Fork lost 41-30 to Kootenia in the 1A Division II championship game on Wednesday night at Lake City High School.

Katey Mae McInturff scored 20 points to lead the Warriors (8-9), who built a 22-8 halftime lead and ultimately punched their ticket to state next week.

“Our biggest thing was we were 3 for 15 in the first half,” lamented Wampus Cat head coach Mark Stevens of his team’s slow start. “We had tons of opportunities to score, we just couldn’t get it in the hole.”

Alicia Heigis scored six points and pulled down six boards, Lyndsie Kiebert scored six to go with three steals, Annie Wurm posted eight rebounds and three steals and Callie Potter dished out four assists to lead the Wampus Cats (2-18), whose season came to an end with the loss.

The Cats came out with some intensity in the third quarter, holding an 11-4 scoring edge, and actually outscored the Warriors in the second half.

“We played a lot harder in the second half. I was glad the girls didn’t just give up,” said Stevens. “We made some runs and got within seven points a couple of times, then they’d get some fast breaks on us.”

Kootenai will represent the North Star League at state on Thursday.
