Travers, Randles lead Bulldogs in 4A IEL duals

RATHDRUM — Josh Travers scored a big win at heavyweight and Casey Randles jumped up two weight classes to pick up a pair of wins at 170 pounds, as the Bulldogs beat Moscow 40-30 and lost to Lakeland 39-33 in a 4A Inland Empire League double dual on Wednesday night in Rathdrum.

Tanner McNelley (132) returned to the lineup for the first time since Tri-State to pick up a win over Moscow, Preston Bunty picked up a big pin at 120 pounds and Travers gave up 50 pounds to score a one point win over the No. 3 ranked 285 pound wrestler in the state. The Bulldogs expect to have their original varsity roster in place by districts — which they haven’t had since December.

“Moscow is a senior-laden team, almost across the board from 152 up, but the kids stayed in good position and kept an up-tempo attack,” said Bulldogs head coach Mike Randles. “The Lakeland dual came down to the final match. Both teams were missing a few starters. Tyler Presser came up big with an important pin at 152. That pin kept us in the match. Scout Nash’s pin at 113 was also key to a tight dual.”

Travers finishes the regular season with a record of 31-5, while Randles posted a 34-5 record. The Bulldogs have been focusing on avoiding stall calls, as they keep on the attack.

Forfeits have been an achilles heel for the Bulldogs, who are stacked in the middles weights.

“We’ve only had one dual, Columbia, this year where we were actually beat in head-to-head match ups,” said Randles. “Our overall numbers are on par with just about any team in the area; however, we are bunched up with kids at the same weight,145-170 pounds, leaving us really thin in other weights, forcing us to forfeit those weights. Nonetheless, hopefully we can count on this depth next week at districts.”

Sandpoint now turns its attention to the Regional tournament next Saturday at Lakeland.
