SANDPOINT — Idaho may be changing the name for the official school bus color — but that’s about all that’s changing.

Sen. John Goedde, R-Coeur d’Alene, is proposing that Idaho change its school bus guidelines for color to match existing federal standards. Under the new proposed provisions, the official language describing the color will change from “school bus chrome” to the more specific, federally-proscribed “federal standard 595a, color number 13432” — or national school bus glossy yellow. The Idaho Senate unanimously passed legislation reflecting those changes Tuesday.

According to Lake Pend Oreille School District transportation director Jacob Iverson, that shouldn’t mean much for district’s existing fleet. For one thing, most school buses in Idaho are already painted to the appropriate federal standards.

“It shouldn’t force us to repaint anything,” Iverson said.
