Support efforts to protect rights

| January 5, 2014 6:00 AM

Having spent 13 hours reading the printed minutes of the Bonner County commissioners from January 2007 thru December,2012, I learned the vast scope of the commissioners’ tasks to manage government responsibilities in Bonner County. Currently, those responsibilities include, but are not limited to, American lands, resource management, deicer on county roads, gun control and so on.

Their recent decision to call on Idaho Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter to “… enact a statute that makes it a felony …for a governmental authority to intentionally and knowingly violate rights protected under the Second Amendment” should be supported by all citizens who also support the First Amendment.

In the 1990s, Australia passed laws which banned the private ownership of rifles, etc not specifically approved by the government. This past summer, a special police task force was created to deal with “… out-of-control gun violence” (Ballina Shire Advocate, Aug. 21, 2013) as their criminals were not paying attention to the gun laws. I have spoken with two of our three Commissioners on three occasions and have found each of them to be sincere, thoughtful men who take measured approaches in meaningful ways.

I encourage all Bonner County citizens to study the U.S. Constitution, consider the freedoms you now enjoy and want to keep enjoying, and give your support to the commissioners for their recent resolution to our governor.
