Forfeits prove costly as Spartans down Bulldogs in wrestling dual
PRIEST RIVER — The visiting Bulldogs won seven of the 11 matches wrestled at Tuesday night’s nonleague meeting with the Spartans, all by way of pin, but forfeits at four weight classes left Sandpoint on the short end of a 43-40 loss.
Preston Bunty (106), Scout Nash (113), Mahonri Hunsaker (138), Alex Oshea (170), Tyler Brown (195), Josh Travers (220), and Talon Egbers (285) all picked up six points for Sandpoint.
“We needed everyone to step up and a couple kids stepped back, but overall we tried to overcome that deficit and fought hard,” Bulldogs coach Mike Randles said. “It seems each time we land here we have three or four kids injured, but I’m sure the Priest River guys have the same thing going on, they just showed up and battled.”
John Allen-Noble (106) and Joe Swartz (182) won by pin for Priest River, which travels to Kellogg for an Intermountain League match today.
The match of the night came at 145-pounds and ended in a 9-1 major decision for Spartan Dallas Hopkins. Hopkins squared off against Sandpoint’s Lewis Dunton, who wrestled tough but seemed to run out of steam as his opponent continued to get stronger.
Casey Randles (160) took a 10-0 major decision in his match for the Bulldogs, who will face 4A powers Nampa and Columbia on Thursday in a double dual at Lakeland High School, a final tuneup for the River City Duals on Friday and Saturday in Post Falls.
