Logan sworn in as Sandpoint mayor
SANDPOINT — When it came time to appoint a new mayor Wednesday, there was only one name on council members’ minds: Carrie Logan.
It only took about 15 minutes for the council to nominate and appoint Logan as mayor before entering into an executive session. As council president, the most experienced council member and the mayor pro tempore, Logan was a natural choice for the office, members said.
Logan will serve the remainder of Mayor Marsha Ogilvie’s term — about two years.
Before council member Shelby Rognstad nominated Logan to the office, he had a few words of remembrance for Ogilvie, who passed away last week.
“She brought people together for a common cause, and that cause was always the right one,” he said. “I hope the new mayor can follow the example set by Marsha.”
Logan already has some experience in the office of mayor. Ogilvie appointed her in November to the status of mayor pro tem, which she used to take care of common task like signing paperwork and officiating meetings while Ogilvie focused on medical treatments. Now that she’s assumed the full mantle of the office, Logan will be taking on the job’s complete responsibilities.
One of the first orders of business for Logan is to find a replacement for her council seat. She said she’ll be accepting letters of interest over the next several weeks before nominating an individual for council approval. Meanwhile, existing council members will likely vote on a new council president at their next regular meeting.
Logan began her first term on the City Council at the beginning of 2008 and was subsequently reelected to her seat in November 2011. She has participated in numerous committees and advisory bodies during that time, including heading up the now-defunct Administrative Committee, serving as council liaison to the Historic Commission, Aquatic Invasive Species Task Force and the Pedestrian Advisory Committee. In addition to the numerous council matters handled over the last six years, Logan has been especially instrumental in matters like working with Amtrak and BNSF Railway to save the Sandpoint Train Depot.
