Speelmon shining in college
SANDPOINT — Former Sandpoint standout Jordan Speelmon had her best game as a college player, scoring 14 points for Green River, which fell 87-82 to Pierce in Northwest Athletic Association of Community College action recently.
Speelmon, a freshman point guard who gets occasional starts against smaller and faster teams, made 10-12 free throws and added three rebounds and three assists for the Gators (2-11). The game marked the third time Speelmon has hit double digits in scoring this season, and the high energy player routinely stuffs the stat sheet with rebounds, assists and steals.
Speelmon, who possesses great speed and quickness, has adjusted to the college game nicely and is scoring more than she ever did in high school.
“The biggest highlight has been seeing how much I have improved and how much I still have to learn and do,” said Speelmon. “I absolutely love getting to meet all the other athletes and building relationships with them. I just love being able to continue my basketball career and I am so excited to see where I go next and I have so many possibilities in front of me.”
Speelmon, whose father Melvin is an assistant coach for the Sandpoint girls basketball team, also plans to play softball for Green River, and will make the transition as soon as the season ends.
