Monarchs top Sturgeons

SANDPOINT — On Tuesday night on the hills above the Kootenai River, Sandpoint’s Green Monarchs sent their reserve squad north to Bonners Ferry for a friendly soccer match, in preparation for this weekend’s Julyfest tournament in Kimberley, B.C.

After a chaotic match on July 1 against the Tizoc Warriors of Spokane, where the referee called off the match early due to temperamental violent play by Tizoc, Monarch management deemed a tune-up match necessary with ally and neighbor club Bonners Ferry Sturgeons.

After 15 scoreless minutes, the Monarchs found the first of their four goals in the 4-0 victory. Young gun Anthony Fox scored twice and generously assisted Ariens. Bonners Ferry fielded a deep roster and was able to sub in fresh legs all game.

George Fox University-bound Joab Logan, an SHS standout, had a couple moments of brilliance resulting in two assists. Seasoned veteran Zac Jones lent some coaching expertise to his young squad. Playing central midfield and leading by good example Zac pierced the Sturgeon’s armor notching a goal of his own.

Even after going down 4-0, the Sturgeons retained their intensity. Strong stamina and physical play resulted in a few near misses late in the second half. SHS grad Austin Keyes tended net for the Monarchs and posted a shutout.

The Green Monarchs plan to again visit their Bonners Ferry comrades in early August, in what has become an annual summer tradition.
