DEQ warns of poor air quality

SANDPOINT — Summer vacations are taking a smoky turn with wildfires in Washington and Canada contributing to poor local air quality.

The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality is warning residents to be careful while smoky air lingers in the region. On Friday, Sandpoint carried a “unhealthy for sensitive groups” or orange rating.

As the third of six air quality ratings, the measurement recommends that children, the elderly and those with respiratory conditions like asthma stay indoors as much as possible. Similarly, children and adults who work or play outside for long periods of time may suffer health problems. The same goes for people with heart disease.
