There are exciting things going on in city

| March 11, 2014 7:00 AM

To the citizens of Sandpoint:

Greetings!

It is my pleasure to write this editorial as an additional way of your city government communicating with you about what is happening in the city. I hope to do this update with you periodically in the future as new developments arise.

We, as your representatives, are very aware of your need for, and interest in, knowing information about the city. To make this exchange as meaningful as possible, I would appreciate hearing from you about topics that you would like to see covered. My contact info is listed below.

Of great interest to the city (although not a city project) is the rehabilitation of the train depot. The architect/engineering firm has been selected by Amtrak (Carlos Suarez/Tim Boden, et al). They are now preparing the construction documents. It is anticipated that those plans will go out to bid by the end of May or the first part of June. Amtrak is committed to using local tradesmen to do as much of the work as possible - that is a good thing for us and a terrific philosophy on their part. The goal is to have the depot functioning again by next winter.

The Memorial Field facilities update and grandstand project is under way. A new Friends of Memorial Field board swung into action last fall and is hard at work planning the fundraising campaign. The city contracted with Sewell Engineering and team (Tom Runa, Tim Boden, Scott Wohlschlager and BF Builders, Inc) to develop construction documents. Once those are complete and we have a firm cost figure, the Friends board will go to work on fundraising. The city has about $200,000 in a dedicated fund to go toward the construction project, so we are on our way. The timeline for completion of that project will be determined largely by the amount and timing of contributions.

The Public Works Department is almost done with the expansion of a water main from the new treatment plant that will better serve the Sandpoint, Ponderay and Kootenai areas. You may have noticed the construction on Larch and Third Avenue where the line that came under Sand Creek was connected to the system.

These are some of the exciting things going on in the city.

Please let me know what you would like to hear about. You can reach me by email, phone, or stop me on the street. I’d love to talk with you.
