Hawks' quick start ends Bulldogs' season
SANDPOINT — Kari Prockish spun a five-hitter on the mound, and provided much of her own run support with four hits, leading Lakeland to a 13-2 win over Sandpoint in the loser-out game of the 4A Region 1 softball tournament on Thursday at Sandpoint Middle School.
Reilly Williams tallied three hits, scoring twice and driving in two as the Hawks (10-13) erupted for seven runs in the first inning and 18 hits in the game, a far departure from Tuesday’s opener, won 19-9 by the Bulldogs. Hawks’ head coach Colleen Bevacqua said the difference was Prockish throwing strikes, as the Hawks walked 16 in Tuesday’s loss.
“Out pitcher really stepped up. She knew she had to get the job done or that was it,” said Bevacqua, who liked how her team rallied after losing home field in a tough loss. “They stuck together as a team, kept each other up.”
The Bulldogs (4-16) could never get the bats going, scoring their only two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Lucinda Calvert shook off a back injury to go the distance on the mound, but the Hawks were finding a lot of holes with base hits.
“Give credit to Lakeland, they were focused and got after it. Their pitcher threw more strikes. We looked like we were pressing, maybe trying to do too much,” said Bulldogs head coach Derek Dickinson. “Lucy is out their gutting it out, trying to do what she could do. She pitcher her heart out.”
Lakeland travels to No. 1 seed Moscow on Saturday.
