Bulldog boys and girls lead at regionals

| May 10, 2014 7:00 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — Senior Lani Wahl doubled up to win both the triple jump and long jump, and Grant Kennaly cleared a season-best 6-0 to win the high jump and 12-9 to win the pole vault, leading the Sandpoint boys and girls to a strong first day at the 4A Region 1 track and field championships on Friday at Coeur d’Alene High School.

Wahl also teamed with Lily DeAragon, Rainey Woodward and Madi Schoening to win the sprint medley relay, punching their ticket to state and putting the Bulldogs in the team lead after the first day. Conditions weren’t the best for top marks, as rain and wind played a role in the meet.

Nikole Alamillo won the discus and finished second in the shot, and Mikhaela Woodward won the 3,200 by a comfortable  margin. Both athletes will be strong contenders next week to contend for state titles.

Sam Levora won the 3,200 and teammate Jacob Graham was second, and Carlos Collado won the shot put to lead the Bulldog boys, who dominated the team standings after the first day.

The 5A and 4A meets will conclude today with running events at Vollmer Bowl in Lewiston starting at 10 a.m., as more Bulldogs will look to earn their spot at state.
