Trio of SHS seniors earn podium spots at 4A state track meet

| May 17, 2014 7:00 AM

BOISE — Three Bulldog seniors notched podium finishes to lead Sandpoint during the first day of the 4A state track and field championships in Boise.

Nikole Alamillo capped a decorated high school career with a season-best throw of 117-11 to finish third in the discus. Alamillo, who will throw next season at Carroll College, won state titles as a sophomore and junior in the discus, and to not win as a senior illustrates just how tough it is to win state titles.

As expected, senior Sam Levora finished second in the 3,200, clocking a 9:36 to finish two seconds ahead of third. Pre-race favorite and nationally ranked Elijah Armstrong of Pocatello ran away from the field at 9:00, and has now beaten Levora three times in the distance race.

Levora, who will run next season at Washington State, might have taken it easy, hoping to conserve all of the legs he can to make a run at taking down Armstrong in the 1,600 today.

Grant Kennaly cleared 6-0, and was a surprise third place finisher in the high jump, nabbing his first spot on a state podium. He’ll make another run at one in the pole vault today. Brother Mark Kennaly finished 11th after clearing 5-10.

Junior Mikhaela Woodward finished sixth in the 3,200, after finishing second in the race last year. Like Levora, she hopes to make a run at a state title in the 1,600, the premier distance race in track.

Senior Jake Rookey finished 8th in the triple jump with a leap of 42-04, the final Bulldog to score points on the first day.

Lani Wahl soared 33-1 to finish 11th in the triple jump, Jacob Graham was 16th in the 3,200 and the girls sprint medley finished 8th. Lily DeAragon was fifth in the 400 prelims, advancing to today’s final, while Kyle Perry finished seventh in the 100 prelims. Nathan Schwartz was 10th in the 300 hurdles and Maddie Schoening 15th in the 100.

The Sandpoint boys are in 5th place in the team standings and the girls are in 6th place.

n Fitzpatrick 9th in pole vault

Clark Fork senior Alexa Fitzpatrick cleared a personal best 7-0 to finish 9th in the pole vault at the 1A state meet at Middleton High School on Friday.

Brandan Bowen finished 11th in the 300 hurdles prelim, and will not advance to today’s final.

Brennan Brooks will be in the hunt today for a state title in the pole vault, looking to break 14-0 and and maybe more.

The remaining field events and running event wrap up today.
