Sutton having a ball playing college lacrosse
SANDPOINT — Former Sandpoint Club Lacrosse player Dean Sutton played for the Utah State University Aggies this season in Logan, Utah, helping lead the team to the national playoffs.
Sutton, who also played football at SHS, is currently playing long middle stick on defense. Lacrosse is a year round sport at Utah State and the team is also encouraged to play in the summer league.
Sutton is enrolled in the school’s flight program and has had to learn to juggle school with lacrosse, sometimes practicing from 9 to 11 at night.
“This isn’t high school anymore,” said Sutton after his first game. “Things are serious on the field here.”
Sutton was able to play quite a bit and even scored a goal with his long stick, helping lead the Aggies to an 8-3 record, the best in the program’s history. He continues to wear number 14 as he did in Sandpoint.
The Aggies received a spot in the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association national playoffs. Their first game was against Colorado State University, which was the top ranked MCLA team in the country and won the national title last year. Half of the team is made up of freshman so they are hoping for an even better season next year.
Sutton began playing lacrosse in the 6th grade, which was then the Sandpoint Bullpups team and is now Sandpoint Cutthroat Lacrosse. The Sandpoint program was started in 2004 with just a varsity team, but has grown to include U9 all the way through varsity.
Sutton is one of a handful of Sandpoint players currently playing in college, with a few more seniors hoping to play at the next level.
This year we are lucky to have Last Best Lacrosse coming to Sandpoint to host a camp for all ages on Monday, June 30 through Thursday, July 3. If you’re interested in playing, attending the camp or just want to see what lacrosse is all about, please visit www.sandpointlacrosse.com.
