Farmin-Stidwell students raise more than $1,000 at jog-a-thon

SANDPOINT — Thanks to 36 Farmin Stidwell students jogging as much as they could for two weeks, classmate Hank Sturgis will get a boost in his fight against cystinosis.

The jogging club raised a whopping $1,140.23, which they donated to helping find a cure for cystinosis.

“I just thought we needed to do a jogging club,” said teacher Trish Butler. “We have a student with cystinosis, so we decided to take care of one of our own.”

A couple of the students logged 18 miles, as they solicited pledges per mile as well as flat donations.

“I was really amazed,” said Butler of the effort. “They could run for a cause, knowing they could make themselves healthy, and someone else.”

Brian Sturgis, whose son Henry attends Farmin-Stidwell, was impressed to see the students take up the cause for their friend and classmate, knowing every dollar raised will help in the fight against the rare disease.

“It’s awesome that this is his cause, Henry was really excited about it,” said Sturgis, who continues to hold fundraisers for cystinosis. “He missed less school this year, a testament to the medication.”
