Levora, DeAragon win new David Lyon Award

| May 31, 2014 7:00 AM

SANDPOINT — Even though he didn’t win a state title, Sam Levora had one of the strongest track and field seasons in Sandpoint history, so it came as little surprise when he won the top award at the SHS track banquet recently. Levora finished second in the 3,200 and 1,600, and pretty much rewrote the SHS record books as a senior.

The Most Valuable Award for SHS track is now called the David Lyon Award, and there is a plaque in the trophy case that will have names engraved each year to honor the former SHS thrower who was killed in Afghanistan in 2013.

Senior Lily DeAragon, who finished fourth in the 400 meters at state and was part of the fourth place 4x400 relay team, won the David Lyon Award for the girls.

Matthew Burgstahler and Sydney Foster won top academic awards.

Other awards included: Coaches’ Award Sprints, Mary Aylward and Clayton Pell; Coaches’ Award Throws, Nikole Alamillo and Carlos Collado; Coaches’ Award Jumps, Lani Wahl and Jake Rookey; Coaches’ Award Jumps/Vault, Grant Kennaly; Coaches’ Award Distance, Mikhaela Woodward, Rainey Woodward, Matthew Burgstahler, Jacob Graham; Over-all Coaches’ Award, Madi Schoening, Austin Diercks, Nathan Schwartz, Sydney Foster.
