Explosive devices attract bomb squad

HOPE — Several suspected explosive devices were discovered alongside Highway 200 on Friday.

Bonner County Sheriff’s Capt. Ror Lakewold said it appeared one of the devices had detonated, while the other two were intact with fuses.

The devices were made of common polyvinyl chloride plumbing tubing. A similar device was found along Highway 200 in Sunnyside last September. That device was found amid a smoldering grass fire.

Lakewold said the devices found near the mouth of Denton Slough could have been placed recently or could date back to the Sunnyside incident and gone undetected. The devices were discovered by somebody gathering trash along the highway.

In both the Sunnyside and Denton Slough incidents, the Spokane Regional Bomb Disposal Unit responded in an “abundance of caution,” said Lakewold.

There were no injuries in either incident.
