RATHDRUM — The Bulldogs started the season sharp in a 25-23, 25-9, 25-19 win over Lakeland in the 4A Inland Empire League volleyball opener for both teams Tuesday night at Hawk Court.

The Bulldogs (1-0, 1-0 4A IEL) were strong in the serve receive game, winning a tight first set before cruising to the sweep. The win is the first for new varsity head coach Erin Roos, who felt her team overcame any possible opening game jitters.

“First day of school, a league match, there were a lot of distractions. I’m really proud of them,” said Roos, calling her team’s play steady. “They’re trying to run some new plays, and there weren’t that many communication breakdowns. It was just a nice first showing.”

No stats were available for Sandpoint. Alyson Lenon had three aces and three kills for Lakeland (0-2, 0-1 4A IEL).

Sandpoint hosts Coeur d’Alene on Thursday, in a home opener at 7 p.m. at Les Rogers Court.
