A dear reader has been battling a type of blood cancer for several years, and last week sent me a letter she’d received from The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society with an appeal to let newspaper readers know that September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month. I’m happy to oblige.

“The knowledge that your entire world has changed. The fear of the unknown treatments ahead. The feeling of anger when you find out that your own blood could be your worst enemy. Every three minutes, someone new experiences this range of emotions — because every three minutes, another person in the United States is diagnosed with blood cancer,” wrote Brian Rosen, chief policy and advocacy officer of LLS.
