SANDPOINT — The Sandpoint and Sagle fire departments are taking proactive measures to ensure a swift response in the event of an oil train derailment.

With concern across the country piqued over the potential for oil-based ecological crises, local firefighters are training to minimize damage in just such a situation. Sagle Fire District and Sandpoint Fire Department personnel have been traveling to Pueblo, Colo., to better learn how to handle oil spills of potentially catastrophic size.

“I think all who attended this training walked away better prepared to deal with these accidents,” said Capt. Jason Cordle of Sagle Fire District.
